First Quebec referendum on sovereignty-association
Rene Levesque tried to make Quebec politically independent of Canada.
Who: Rene Levesque, Quebecois
What: Rene Levesque attempted to negotiate a politically independent Quebec, with close economic ties with Canada which he called a sovereignty-association. In the referendum only 40% voted "yes" to the sovereignty-association.
Why: Some people in Quebec wanted to separate from Canada and become an independently governed nation. Most however did not agree with this idea causing the referendum to not pass.
How: The constitution was constantly trying to be patriated and amended to suit the needs of Canadians. Some Quebecois felt disconnected from other Canadians and wanted separation from Canada; the majority of Quebecois however, did not share this outlook.
